Town Council. The changes to the PGT Service Plan for the construction of the San Cristoforo-Parking Interchange Hub via Merula have been approved

Milan, March 22 2021 – The City Council approved some changes to the destinations of the Service Plan of the Territorial Government Plan in force and the acquisition of an area of the National Agency for the Administration and Destination of Seized and Confiscated Assets from Organized Crime for the purpose to allow the construction of the San Cristoforo-Parking Interchange Hub via Merula, the western terminus of the M4 metro line.

The San Cristoforo-Merula interchange car park will be built on areas totaling 20 thousand square metres, partly municipal (the site of the demolished former nursery school) and partly owned by the National Agency for Administration and Destination of Assets Seized and Confiscated from Organized Crime; areas that were polluted. The areas of the Agency will be granted free of charge because they are intended for public utility functions.

The project includes a completely underground car park with a floor dedicated to parking cars with 290 spaces without taking away surface space. At street level, a hub will be partly built for the terminus of extra-urban buses that connect Milan to Buccinasco, Corsico and the other municipalities in this part of the metropolitan city area. Most of the parking surface will instead be dedicated to greenery and space for the neighborhood, connected with via Martinelli and the area currently occupied by the construction site which will connect via Martinelli with via Ludovico il Moro. This area will be pedestrian and green and will represent a space for the neighborhood as well as the connection with the walkway that connects with the S. Cristoforo M4 station. In this area there is also a bus stop, an extension of tram 2 and their exclusive transit. A velo station will also be located to safely store bicycles. The construction of the underground car park will therefore allow the creation of a green connection and public space between the neighborhood and the South Park.

Car access to the car park will not take place from the streets of the neighborhood but from the new road system between via Enna and via Chiodi, a single lane road in each direction, complete with cycle path and trees. This new road will be reachable to the south only from via Enna, from the Giordani overpass and from the road connection with Buccinasco; while to the north it will be directly connected exclusively to via Chiodi, via Faenza and viale Famagosta. In this way the intense traffic entering and exiting the city will be diverted from the current Via Ludovico il Moro and Via Martinelli, part of the neighbourhood, towards the new road system and from this to the car park, away from the homes and separated by a green corridor. Its construction will be an important opportunity to redevelop and moderate the speed on Via Martinelli, improving the road safety of the neighborhood and the liveability of the spaces, also according to the indications that Municipality 6 will provide.
