Milan, November 11 2019 – Milan is increasingly a bridge between tradition and innovation also in trade. The number of activities included in the register of the city's "Historical Shops" has expanded, reaching 549 today. The 60 new prestigious awards were awarded by the Mayor Giuseppe Sala with the councilor for Labor Policies, Productive Activities and Commerce Cristina Tajani and the representatives of the trade associations, during the official ceremony which took place this morning in the evocative Sala Alessi in Palazzo Marino. The ceremony saw the participation of Alfredo Zini, President of the Historical Enterprises Club of Confcommercio and Marco Accornero, General Secretary of the Artisans Union of the Province of Milan.

“Rewarding our historic shops – said the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala – means first of all giving recognition to small Milanese entrepreneurship, sometimes born in difficult times, during the war and just after, but which has contributed to making this city, in every moment, lively and friendly and equipped with every commodity. In Milan you have always found everything and the credit goes to these shopkeepers who have resisted with their load of history, reliability and proximity for fifty or more years. Our most sincere thanks to them."

“The Historic Shops – explains councilor Tajani – are the symbol of the commercial liveliness of Milan capable of combining tradition and innovation. A company capable of always being in tune with the new needs of citizens and market trends without giving up its heritage of tradition and expertise. Activities born over 50 years ago from the intuition of an individual or from a long family tradition which over time have become an integral part of the history and life of the neighborhood, of the city and of each of us. In recent years we have placed the valorisation of these realities among the objectives of our administrative action, supporting and promoting many actions, from exhibitions to tourist itineraries through modern apps useful for making the numerous tourists and Milanese people aware of and appreciating this great heritage of ours. culture, knowledge and artisan wisdom”.

Among the sixty businesses that become part of the register of "Historical Shops", the oldest is "Ottica Quercetti" whose opening dates back to 1841 followed by a name that has become an icon for pipe lovers all over the world , “Savinelli 1876”. Two temples of taste and confectionery art become historic shops, the “Pasticceria Sant'Ambroeus” which began to delight the palates of the Milanese in 1936 and the “Pasticceria Martesana” inaugurated in 1967. The “Bar Quadronno” has also been awarded since 1964 recognized by all as the first sandwich shop open until late in the city and the legendary "Giannasi" kiosk in Porta Romana, which has been selling the most famous spit-roasted chicken in Milan since 1967 and the "Bice" restaurants inaugurated in 1938 and "da Giacomo" born in 1958, as well as numerous neighborhood shops (7 bakeries, 5 barbers, 3 shoe shops, 2 butchers, 2 toy shops etc.) which daily contribute to animating the commercial life of the Lombard capital in a constant balance between tradition and innovation to better respond to the changing needs of citizens.

To be recognized as a "Historical Shop" there are two fundamental criteria required: that the business has been active for at least 50 years in the same product sector, regardless of any changes in ownership, and that it retains totally or partially the constructive, decorative and of historical or architectural interest.
