Tajani: "We ask for the collaboration of citizens and street vendors for a peaceful and safe conduct in compliance with the indications"

Milan, May 20 2020 – The plan for the gradual reopening of the city's outdoor markets prepared by the Milan Municipality in collaboration with trade associations continues and expands. Signed this afternoon by the Mayor, Giuseppe Sala, the provision which from tomorrow, Thursday 21 May, allows the expansion of the markets also to non-food operators. On Saturday 23rd there will be 9 markets available to citizens: in Papiniano, Benedetto Marcello, Fauché, Tabacchi, Falck and Ciccotti, Osoppo, Garigliano/Lagosta and Aristotele/Martesana will also be added.

From Monday 25 May all 94 weekly markets will resume their activities according to their composition and ordinary calendar.

“In recent days as an Administration we have worked hard, putting in place an impressive organizational effort to arrive, next Monday, at the complete opening of all the city's open markets, with full safety of the service for citizens and street vendors - declared the Councilor for Policies for work, productive activities and commerce Cristina Tajani -. The quota rule borne by the municipalities, established by the ordinance of the Lombardy Region, is not sustainable in the long term and we hope that it will lapse in the coming weeks. We also ask citizens and street vendors to contribute to the peaceful conduct of market activities with conscious and correct behavior, in order to avoid gatherings."

"The agreement we have reached with the Municipality establishes a very important point that is eagerly awaited by the many street vendors who have not worked for too long now: the restart of all the weekly outdoor markets in Milan. This week the activity expands to non-food in the scheduled markets and from Monday the activity of the 94 markets in Milan will resume according to the usual deadlines: 2.600 stopped companies will return to operate - underlines Giacomo Errico, president of APECA, the street vendors association of Confcommercio Milan - The resumption criteria will guarantee full safety for citizens and operators with entry quotas and the active collaboration of our members".

To protect the health of customers and operators, the provision confirms the delimitation of the market locations which will remain fenced and will have mandatory access and exit gates in order to limit the crossing of people. The gates will be manned by specially dedicated staff who will regulate the influx of citizens before entering the market area. Each commercial operator must necessarily use a mask and gloves. The sales counters will be placed with a minimum distance of 1 meter. Public access will only be permitted by wearing gloves and masks.

With a view to collaboration between the Administration and trade associations for the new market structures during 'phase 2' of the Covid-19 emergency, the Municipality will take charge of the cordoning off, the taping of the market areas, and the local police services. Operators are asked to share only security costs.
