Milan, March 7 2021 - Di seguito il discorso tenuto dal Sindaco di Milano Giuseppe Sala nel corso della cerimonia di commemorazione di Carlo Tognoli che si è tenuta questa mattina nella Sala Alessi di Palazzo Marino.

MAYOR SALA'S SPEECH

Dear Charles, 

we are here around you with hearts full of sadness at the idea of ​​no longer seeing you in this building that was your palace. 

Vedi, mi rendo conto sempre di più che il sindaco di Milano è eletto in un certo momento, in una data precisa, ma poi è come se dovesse farsi eleggere ogni giorno del suo mandato. 

The Milanese and the Milanese do not give discounts. 

They don't consider being mayor a right or a privilege, on the contrary. 

Essere sindaco a Milano significa semplicemente essere al servizio della città. 

“Uno che c’è sempre”, dicevano di te i Milanesi ed è probabilmente uno dei più bei complimenti rivolti a un sindaco di Milano. 

Yes, Carlo, you were always there for everyone. 

Per chi aveva bisogno, per chi era senza lavoro, per chi aveva un problema, per chi voleva creare qualcosa, per gli industriali, per i tranvieri, per gli artisti e i teatranti. 

You were always there for everyone, with your knowledge of the city and with that unique ability of yours to move the machinery of the Municipality by acting on its interpreters and on its humblest and therefore most precious mechanisms. 

Tu sei stato la dimostrazione di quanto si riesce a fare se mossi da un vero ed effettivo amore per Milano. 

Your presence has always been characterized by a double vision, which combined daily action in favor of the Milanese and their problems with a historical, political and strategic perspective of the city's affairs.

Milano ha saputo rialzarsi sempre dalle sue crisi perché ha trovato sulla sua strada persone come Carlo Tognoli. 

Not only have you helped the problems of your citizens every day, not only have you given courage to the city to emerge from the years of lead: you have also directed the city on some fundamental choices for its future. 

I think of the attention you have always paid to culture, entertainment and the city's theaters. 

And the transport and metro system also received an unparalleled boost from you. 

If I may, among all your political choices the one that strikes me most is the environmental one: attention to the climate and the habitat of the secular, decisive city, without excesses. 

The push for methane conversion, the attention to greenery, the choice of the unprecedented closure of the center to cars, also supported by the sensational result of the 1985 referendum, are political and administrative acts which also had something prophetic in them. 

Questa spinta al futuro è ben riassunta anche dall’immagine del più giovane sindaco della storia di Milano in giro in bicicletta per la città. 

Today perhaps we are arriving at a true culture of the Milanese in terms of soft mobility, you had intuited and practiced it many years ago. 

Questa ripresa della città ha dato vita a una fase di effervescenza che sembrava aver fatto perdere a Milano il senso del suo limite, non certamente a te, ma a tanti che hanno visto in uno sviluppo senza freni e senza attenzione all’equità sociale il senso della Milano di quel momento storico. 

E non furono sufficienti i richiami del cardinal Martini e di quanti intuirono che in questo sbilanciamento Milano (e con lei il Paese) rischiava di perdere molta della sua identità. 

Così sono arrivati i nuovi anni bui di Milano, che hanno investito la politica. 

I like to remember how much dignity you defended your actions by immediately demanding and offering maximum clarity on your behavior. 

Time and justice have then clarified how much and how your conduct was unrelated to many negative examples. 

How much suffering, even in a political career that continued on the benches of parliament and in government positions, has the eclipse of socialism and the party that represented it cost you! 

And even today our city struggles to objectively address the socialist legacy in its history. 

Quello che però è certo è che questa esperienza ha prodotto uomini come te, veri maestri politici della storia di Milano.

All this cannot be drowned in pure opposition for or against the destinies of individuals. 

Instead, we must have the courage to rethink socialism, perhaps to rethink socialism. 

Not to divide ourselves into the barriers of the known, but to understand how this experience can build new democratic alternatives, new visions, new opportunities for a future that can combine equity, development and respect for the environment. 

Io credo che questo possa essere il modo migliore per rendere omaggio a persone come te e al tuo grande contributo al futuro di Milano. 

Thank you, Carlo, for what you have done for the city.

Thank you for the lesson in dignity and courage that your life will continue to give to all of us. 

Grazie perché il tuo ricordo non smetterà mai di insegnarci ad “Amare Milano”.
