Bruzzano. Work on the Ferrovienord third track will begin from 17 February

Railway expansion between the stations of Affori, Bruzzano and Cormano/Cusano. The cycle/pedestrian crossing remains open, the level crossing in via Oroboni is closed

Milan, February 10 2020 - In recent days the Municipality of Milan, together with Ferrovienord, met the residents of the Bruzzano district to present the works to upgrade the railway with the new third track between the Affori, Bruzzano and Cormano/Cusano stations, and the closure of the passage at the level of via Oroboni in the Bruzzano district. The works will start on Monday 17 February with the definitive closure of the level crossing in via Oroboni and the maintenance of the pedestrian and cycle passage and will end with the new cycle/pedestrian underpass at the end of December 2021.

The intervention allows the addition of a new suburban railway line, the S12 Melegnano-Varedo, which will make it possible to increase the overall frequency of S trains in the Affori, Bruzzano, Cormano/Cusano, Paderno Dugnano, Palazzolo Milanese and Varedo stations from one train every 20 minutes to a train every 10 minutes, thus improving passenger transport capacity and frequency of the general service and reducing traffic in Milan and the metropolitan area. In addition to the third track, a cycle/pedestrian underpass will be built in place of the current level crossing in via Oroboni. The choice was shared in 2015 with the citizens who had preferred the construction of a cycle-pedestrian-only underpass and on the shortest and most historic route between the two parts of the Bruzzano district, thus facilitating pedestrian and cycle connections along the streets of the neighborhood where they are located the shops, public establishments, schools, church, ATM stops, avoiding underpasses also accessible to vehicles that would have brought through traffic into the neighborhood.

From the start of the works, Monday 17 February, the current level crossing in via Oroboni will be permanently closed to car traffic, while pedestrian and cycle passage will always be possible until the completion of the works scheduled for the end of 2021 with the opening of the new cycle/pedestrian underpass in via Oroboni. 2020 will be the year with the most invasive construction sites with the closure to traffic of via Oroboni from via Alberico da Barbiano to via Urbino and the first sections of via Mazzucchelli and Pesaro.

From 9 March the ATM 41 line will be diverted from via Morlotti to via Fano and then to via Pesaro in the current route, with the movement of two stops until December 2021. From March to October 2020 various phases of work will take place along via del Reno , involving via Carli, via Tago, via Fontanelli, via Marna, via Danubio. Then until January 2021 work will continue on the underpass in via Dora Baltea. The new cycle/pedestrian underpass in via Oroboni will be built in 2021 with a reduced impact of the construction sites compared to 2020.

According to the requests of the Municipality of Milan, with the works on the third track, the new cycle-pedestrian connection will be created between the Scherillo/Reno intersection and via Galliano, significantly shortening the route that the citizens of Bruzzano take today to reach the M3 Affori Fn. The interventions also include the creation of fishbone car parks in via Carli and in via Fontanelli along viale Rubicone, thus balancing the parking ratio in that part of the neighborhood with around 130 new parking spaces for residents which will fill the gap in the current ones placed in via del Reno on the side along the railway line which are around 70. The intervention will also modify via della Marna making it one-way with exit in via del Danubio, thus allowing cars to park on both sides.

During the works, and especially between February and December 2020, inconveniences for citizens in the streets affected by the construction sites will be expected, but the result will allow the neighborhood to be improved and an expansion of the railway service on this line that has been expected for many years will be possible, for better connect the Bruzzano neighborhood with the rest of the city and to encourage the use of the train for the citizens of the municipalities of Cormano, Cusano, Paderno, Palazzolo, Varedo, who today cross the neighborhoods of Milan with their cars, helping to combat traffic and pollution.
