Active services

Milan, 2 December 2020 – Thanks to a group of 66 volunteer employees of the Libraries Area of the Municipality of Milan, the loan activity with home delivery was launched on Friday 27 November. On foot, by public transport, with the van provided by the service or with one of the 3 cargo bikes available, the librarians deliver the books requested on loan to all citizens over 70 and to those who, due to the Covid epidemic, -19 or other health conditions, they cannot leave the house or it is recommended that they do not.

There have already been 235 users who have received books, films and other pre-ordered material at home, which remained in the libraries due to the closure determined by the latest Prime Ministerial Decree of 3 November.

The service is about to be expanded thanks to the collaboration with social network Ugo, already active in the municipality of Milan with coaching and support services for elderly people or those in frail conditions. Nine Ugo operators will be available to libraries until 31 January 2021, one for each municipality, to ensure home lending.

From Thursday 3 December, users who fall into the categories to which the service is dedicated will be able to call or send an email to their usual library and request books, audiobooks, films, music CDs to be received directly at home, at an agreed time and in a set time. All types of documents eligible for the loan can be requested.

Some of these "reading riders" will be selected among the guests of the Enzo Jannacci welcome home, and specifically trained to carry out the delivery activity. This gives the service an additional social value because it favors those paths of orientation and escape from marginal situations that accompany and integrate the hospitality offered by the House.

For citizens who do not have mobility problems, the activation of a book collection service for books booked at some bookshops in the LIM circuit (Milan independent bookshops) and in 36 newsstands associated with SNAG (National Autonomous Newsagents Union) is expected from next week. . To access the service, simply connect to the portal from 7 December Milan Library System and book the works you are interested in from the online catalogue, simultaneously choosing the newsstand or bookshop where you want to collect them.
The list of collection locations will be updated in real time.

This service will be guaranteed on an experimental basis until 31 January 2021. When libraries are able to operate regularly again, we will evaluate whether to maintain it in those neighborhoods of the city that do not have a library in the immediate vicinity, so as to expand the network of "lending points" and offer users a service of greater territorial proximity.
