Street furniture. Piazza Sant'Agostino, redevelopment work begins

Trees, benches and new flooring are coming. During the intervention, the market will be moved to the neighboring streets

Milan, August 5 2019 – Greener, more livable and decent. This will be Piazza Sant'Agostino at the end of the redevelopment project starting today, after the resolution, in favor of the Municipality of Milan, of the disputes with companies that had participated, without winning, in the tender for the assignment of the works.

“A long-awaited intervention is starting in the neighborhood which will transform a chaotic parking area into a predominantly pedestrian space equipped with 80 new trees – declare the councilors for Urban Planning Pierfrancesco Maran and Mobility Marco Granelli -. The intervention is part of a strategy we have been working on for some time, which brings the squares back to the center of the neighborhoods, increasing public space and greenery. Let's think about the regeneration of Rimembranze di Lambrate, Beccaria, Negrelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Liberty, the tactical urban planning interventions in Dergano, Corvetto, Porta Genova, Gasparri, the birth of Piazza Olivetti and the system of squares in Cascina Merlata, the projects already presented for Castello, Lavater, San Luigi, Madonna delle Grazie, Archinto, Cordusio. It is a work that will continue towards Milan 2030, which will regenerate seven highly accessible squares located on the 90/91 axis, starting from Piazzale Loreto".

The first activities have already begun with the moving of the bike sharing station from via Numa Pompilio to via Cesare da Sesto and the installation of the camera between via Ausonio and via Cesare da Sesto for the creation of a limited traffic area, with guaranteed transit for residents and in some time slots to traders. From today the construction work on the square begins with the relative temporary relocation of the market to viale Papiniano (up to the intersection with via degli Olivetani), in via Numa Pompilio (up to the intersection with via Servio Tullio) and in via Bragadino (in this street , only on Saturday). Subsequently, excavations will begin for the relocation of the aqueduct and the renovation of the square: 5.000 square meters of new smooth asphalt paving will be created and eighty trees will be planted (ginko and maples), as well as shrubs fed by a new irrigation system. New seats will also be installed and coexistence between urban spaces and the market will be guaranteed. At the end of the works, which will last approximately one year and 4 months for a total of approximately 1,5 million euros, the market will return completely to the square on Tuesday with approximately 55 stalls; on Saturday, however, 55 stalls will be located in the square and another 25 will be located along the road axis of Viale Papiniano.

"Thanks to the joint work of technicians and market operators we have arrived at a shared vision of the area capable of enhancing the urban aspect of the square which will certainly be more livable and usable by citizens and residents, and at the same time we have preserved the commercial use of one of the most frequented and appreciated markets in the city", comments the councilor for employment policies, productive activities and trade Cristina Tajani.
