Maran and Granelli: "Intervention expected in an area of the city that is changing a lot from the point of view of the quality of public space". Pedestrian areas and greenery in front of the 800th century church

Milan, 10 April 2021 – From messy parking and a true pedestrian oasis in the center of the Corvetto district. The redevelopment works of Piazza San Luigi, Corso Lodi area, have been completed, a new piece of the strategy for the redevelopment of the city's squares.

"It was a long-awaited project for the citizens of the neighborhood who from today have a new pedestrian space, green and tidy, in the logic of the 15-minute city – underline the councilors Pierfrancesco Maran (Urbanism) and Marco Granelli (Mobility) –. We are in an area of the city that is seeing important changes from the point of view of the quality of public space, from Piazza Angilberto to Piazza Ferrara, passing through the new Municipality district in Via Sile which brings with it the redevelopment of the surrounding streets. And in the next years the change will be even more evident with the regeneration of the Scalo Romana".

The intervention in Piazza San Luigi covered an area of approximately 2.000 square meters and saw the reorganization and rationalization of the public space for greater usability. As requested by Municipality 4, the central part of the square has been pedestrianised, with access allowed only to service and emergency vehicles. At the ends of the square, the existing vehicular connections between Via Scrivia and the stretch of Via Don Bosco and between Via Don Bosco and Via Tagliamento were maintained, while at the intersection between Via Scrivia and Corso Lodi mobile Pilomats were placed for the institution of the limited traffic zone.

The entire square was raised 15 centimeters above the road level, in order to slow down traffic at the intersections and increase the sense of continuity of the pedestrian part. The area was completely repaved with porphyry cubes, the same material used in the portion in front of the beautiful 800th century church which dominates the square, while in the central area a large square-shaped area was created in gneiss slabs, which interacting with the monumental presence of the church it constitutes a sort of ideal churchyard. Surrounding this central space, two large flowerbeds of approximately 190 square meters host 8 trees and shrubs and stone benches.
