Street furniture. Fountains, a summer of cleaning and restoration work on the systems
Dozens of works in progress and those planned in the coming weeks throughout the city
Milan, 7 August 2019 - From San Babila to Santa Giulia, from the Castle to the Bicocca, from Piazza Cadorna to Piazza Tirana: there are many widespread cleaning and reactivation interventions on the city fountains underway and planned for the next few weeks.
The activities of the new three-year maintenance contract began in June with the initial preparation of the periodic cycles of administration of water treatment substances in the fountains, necessary to keep the proliferation of algae and microorganisms in the reservoirs controlled, especially in conjunction with of summer heat peaks. In parallel, cleaning and reactivation operations began on various city fountains in order to progressively re-establish suitable conditions of decorum, public hygiene and safety. In particular, between June and July the interventions involved various fountains, including those located in the Ducal Courtyard of the Sforzesco Castle, Sempione Park, Piazza Fontana, Piazza Sant'Ambrogio, Piazza Sant'Angelo, Piazza Costantino, Corso Indipendenza, Piazza Fratelli Bandiera, Piazza Vigili del Fuoco, Piazza Emilia, Piazza Remo Cantoni, via Mario Pichi – via Magolfa – Alzaia Naviglio Pavese, via San Paolino, viale Caterina da Forlì, piazza Vesuvio, via San Giusto – via Pio II, Park of Villa Scheibler and Villa Litta Park.
There are many interventions currently underway and soon to be completed aimed at restoring the decorum, hygiene and functionality of other systems: in Piazza San Babila (in addition to cleaning the surfaces, all the faulty equipment is being replaced in order to fully put it back into operation), in via Luigi Alamanni – via Sibari (where the cleaning of the building has already been prepared and the imminent replacement of the pumping system is scheduled for the final recommissioning of the fountain), in piazza Enzo Paci (with the replacement of the faulty components and recommissioning of the systems), in Viale dell'Innovazione in the Bicocca district (cleaning and reactivation of the entire complex of pools and play areas level with the pavement); in Piazza Napoli (cleaning and hydraulic repair of various damaged components).
The heritage of fountains that will be the subject of similar interventions is very extensive and characterized by both construction and plant maintenance needs of an electrical and hydraulic nature. In the coming weeks, with expected completion by the first part of autumn, cleaning and reactivation interventions are planned for various systems: via Paolo Mantegazza (already subject to cleaning and imminent replacement of the faulty components of the pumping systems); largo Guido Donegani, piazzale Luigi Cadorna, entrance to the Lambrate Cemetery, piazza Tirana, via Antonio Mosca, via Osteno, Parco Franco Verga, Parco Giudo Vergani, via Federico De Roberto, corso Como, piazza Giorgio Kaisserlian; piazzale Gabriele Rosa and piazza Schiavone.
Periodic water treatment operations will continue throughout the summer, carried out in rotation on the city's buildings with the aim of containing the proliferation of algae and insect larvae.
