Milan, March 2 2021 – There are over 70 dogs and 56 handlers trained by the Dog Unit of the local police of Milan, operational since 2000, the first in Italy, and active as a school available to the local police and other administrations since 2002. Only in the two-year period 2019-2020 9 dogs were trained for the municipalities of Venice, Brescia, Bergamo, Padua and Verona.

"We are particularly proud of the work and prestige of the Canine Unit of the local police of Milan - declare the Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Security Anna Scavuzzo and the Commander of the local Police Marco Ciacci -. Putting one's consolidated experience and the professionalism acquired at the service of others Local and municipal police forces, not limiting themselves to training and developing the units that will work in Milan, is a gesture of great collaboration, which gives even greater prestige to the experience of the Unit".

As part of these collaborations, the Council approved the guidelines for the definition of an agreement between the Municipality of Milan and the Municipality of Lecco for the operational support activities by the Dog Unit relating to the "Safe Schools 2020- 2021", financed with funds from the Ministry of the Interior, for the prevention and fight against drug dealing near the schools of Lecco.

The Canine Unit of the local police of Milan, made up of 10 operational dogs, is in recent weeks training three new recruits (Dante and Quirky aged 6 months and Oslo aged 11 months), who will replace three pillars of the Unit - Bond, Olaf and Fado - in the process of retiring. There were 1.080 operations carried out by the Unit in 2020 and more than 500 kilos of narcotic substances seized in the last five years thanks to their nose.
