Environment. New life for the banks and floodplain areas of the Lambro

Thanks to the PNRR over 8,5 million euros to improve the landscape and naturalistic aspects of the river - Two images of the planned intervention

Milan, February 9 2023 – The municipal administration confirms its commitment to protect, enhance and rediscover the city's watercourse heritage. The plan of interventions for the hydraulic protection of the territory in the floodplain areas of the Lambro river and for the improvement of landscape and naturalistic aspects was approved today by the Council thanks to an investment of over 8,5 million euros.

The intervention is included in the three-year public works plan 2022-2024 and falls within the scope of the projects financed by the PNRR funds to support the urban regeneration actions planned in the Milan area.

Specifically, the project will concern the creation of an area of natural expansion on the right bank of the Lambro river (in the urban stretch between Via Idro and the Naviglio Martesana), through the removal of the current embankment and its repositioning along Via Idro. The new embankment, which will be conveniently connected to the surrounding area with a gentle slope in order to create landscape continuity, will have a height comparable to that of the existing embankment along the river.

The project also involves the creation of a new cycle/pedestrian path connected to the cycle path along the Martesana and a wetland area connected to the Lambro for the increase in biodiversity and the nesting of migratory birds. New plantings of tree species are also planned which will contribute to the improvement of the naturalistic and landscape aspects, both within the floodplain area and along the axis of Via Idro.

The redevelopment of the banks and floodplain areas of the Lambro is part of continuity and complement to other interventions that will affect the area such as the construction of the "Quartiere Adriano-Cascina Gobba M2" light rail line.

The Lambro and its agricultural open spaces, canals, parks, natural and fruitful areas but also with the various urban elements and productive activities present along its course, if adequately recovered, redeveloped and connected, can become elements of a real green infrastructure available to Milan and its inhabitants. The measure approved today aims to strengthen the ecological and ecosystem function of the river by integrating it with urban functions, to give the Lambro back a central role in the life of the city.

The works and interventions in the floodplain areas of the river aimed at improving the landscape and naturalistic aspects will be entrusted to MM SpA, will have a total duration of 36 months and will affect the stretch of river between via Idro, from the hydraulic junction of the Naviglio Martesana, up to in via Padova.
