Environment. Milan with nine cities and the Ministry of Infrastructure for sustainable urban contexts

Milan, September 9 2022 – Milan at the forefront for the development of increasingly intelligent and sustainable cities. The memorandum of understanding was signed today between the municipalities of Milan, Rome, Turin, Bergamo, Bologna, Florence, Padua, Parma, Prato and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility for the pursuit of the objectives of the European Union mission "100 climate -neutral cities by 2030 – by and for the citizens", within the framework program of the European Union for research and innovation for the period 2021-2027 "Horizon Europe".

The memorandum of understanding between the nine municipalities and the Ministry is aimed at encouraging collaboration for the development of shared projects and the dissemination of good practices, as well as being a useful tool for accessing funds from the European research and innovation program "Horizon " which provides territories with funding of over 360 million euros to move towards carbon neutrality by 2030.

Specifically, the protocol will allow cities to launch research and innovation actions on clean mobility, energy efficiency and green urban planning, offering individual administrations the possibility of carrying out pilot projects, developing good practices and collaborations with other urban contexts.
In synergy with other European Union programmes, the attraction of private funds for the development and sustainability of cities will be favoured.

The creation of a coordination committee is also envisaged, composed of representatives of each of the participating municipalities and chaired by the Minister in charge of the MIMS supported by a technical table with support functions.

The signing of the document was preceded, on Wednesday 7 September, by the approval by the municipal council of a provision which resolved the Lombardy capital's adherence to the protocol.
