Environment. Milan events become green, plastic free and sustainable

Grandi: "A measure that is in tune with the tendency to organize eco-compatible events capable of combining fun with a zero waste, environmentally friendly and sustainable city"

Milan, 5 December 2021 – Milan is increasingly attentive to environmental protection even in small and large events. From the abandonment of disposable plastics to the use of totally recyclable materials for the stands, through the use of electricity derived from renewable sources up to the mitigation of CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions into the air.

These are some of the criteria that were approved by the Council for the adoption, on an experimental basis, of the guidelines for the creation of events in the city, so that they are increasingly sustainable and respectful of the environment.

“The tendency to organize eco-compatible events is increasingly strong. A sustainable event not only contributes to protecting the environment, but is an advantage in terms of marketing for sponsors, promoters and public opinion – declares the Councilor for the Environment and Green, Elena Grandi –. These guidelines are in continuity with actions already implemented in recent years, such as the elimination of single-use plastics and the recovery of food waste, in the belief that a correct synergy between public administration and private individuals is fundamental for achieving a city with zero waste and zero waste, capable of reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions even during concerts, demonstrations or other events".

The provision identifies four rewarding criteria that must be respected for the creation of events in the city, such as: use of recyclable materials for installations; respect for separate waste collection and limitation of single-use plastics thanks also to the use of alternative recyclable and easily reusable materials; attention to combating food waste where possible; resort to the use of electricity deriving from renewable sources. Criteria that are in line with the directions expressed in recent years by the Administration with the adoption of policies increasingly attentive to sustainability such as "Milano Plastic Free" and to combat food waste as indicated by "Milano Food Policy".

The adoption of the criteria suggested by the guidelines will be differentiated based on the different types of events:

  • events organized directly by the Municipality, for which the inclusion of the four criteria is expected as minimum mandatory elements, where applicable, in the tender specifications;
  • events organized by third parties, advertised by the Municipality and sponsored by the Municipality without selection (i.e. at the request of the proponent) for which the four criteria must be included in the guidelines to be sent to the organizers at the time of the request for patronage or request for use of public land;
  • events organized by Third Sector bodies and also hosted at the facilities of the Municipality or Municipalities for which the four criteria will be adopted on a voluntary basis and included in the guidelines to be sent to the organizers when requesting patronage or use of spaces;
  • events organized by third parties for which the four criteria will be implemented on a voluntary basis following an awareness raising action by the Municipality for the implementation of events that are as sustainable as possible.

The start of the experimentation will concern in particular all the events organized by the Municipality of Milan and the events scheduled at the Fabbrica del Vapore and in the offices under the jurisdiction of the Administration starting from 2022.
