Environment. Controls on the illicit storage of waste: four complaints and one warehouse seized

The Municipality is a civil party for the fire in via Chiasserini

Milan, June 13 2019 – The Municipality of Milan became a civil party in the trial for the arson in via Chiasserini last October, which saw a total of thirteen people accused of the illegal management of large quantities of special waste delivered to the company in the area Bovisasca and then burned.

“A necessary act – defined it by the Environment Councilor Marco Granelli -. On behalf of all citizens the Municipality wants to be part of this process. The incident in via Chiasserini was an episode that worried the whole city and which needs to be clarified."
In the meantime, the checks carried out by the Environment Unit of the Local Police continue. Last week the agents proceeded to report four people for unauthorized waste management activities, with the aggravating circumstance of complicity, and to seize a warehouse used as a storage area.

In this case the report came from some citizens who contacted the Local Police because they had noticed that a lot of goods were often unloaded in a warehouse in via Val Gardena.
After some stakeouts, the agents of the Environment Unit stopped four men on board a truck ready to unload mixed special waste, such as wood, iron and other rubble from construction works, into the warehouse.

A subsequent check inside the warehouse of approximately 150 square meters gave positive results: various types of waste such as building material, insulating material, household appliances, wood, plastic and tires were found, as well as dangerous waste consisting of electrical and electronic equipment , lead acid batteries and neon tubes. Outside the building, in an area of approximately 40 square metres, approximately ten cubic meters of food liquids were found, in particular plastic bottles and cans of common drinks, as well as tires and an asbestos cement covering of approximately two square meters.

The warehouse, in agreement with the public prosecutor, was seized and the four men were reported: a 56-year-old Egyptian and a 53-year-old Moldovan, the first driving the van and the second in possession of the keys to the warehouse, they were reported for having transported special waste and for having set up and managed a landfill for large quantities of dangerous and non-hazardous special waste. The other two, an Italian and a Moldovan, were reported for having collected and contributed to the illicit transport of waste.

The vehicle, a Ford Transit not suitable for transporting waste, as it lacked authorization and without the required identification form required to accompany waste, was also seized.

“The checks of the Environmental Unit of the Local Police – concluded the deputy mayor Anna Scavuzzo – continue to verify that the rules are respected as the environment must be respected. In this case we thank the citizens who reported possible crimes to us, because through the investigation we were able to intervene to seize the warehouse full of waste that had not been properly disposed of and report those responsible".
