Milan, March 3 2023 – Women protagonists, always. In the history, art, science, life and future of Milan. On the day dedicated to them, March 8, and on every other day and place where a woman has made and is making a difference.

Today at Palazzo Marino, in the Clock Room, the delegate for Gender Equal Opportunities, Elena Lattuada, illustrated some of the initiatives of "Milan City of Women", the program created by the Municipality of Milan on the occasion of International Women's Day.

He did so by relaunching, at the same time, the importance for young women of choosing technical-scientific study paths - the so-called STEM careers - by asking two authoritative figures, the new rector of the Polytechnic of Milan, Donatella Sciuto, and the rector of Milano Bicocca, Giovanna Iannantuoni, to tell stories of women of yesterday and today who have contributed to research in the national and international field. A way to outline a challenge for the future.

Present in the room and greeted with great applause was the "lady of the comets", the aerospace engineer Amalia Ercoli-Finzi.

"We have chosen to create events and meeting opportunities – said Elena Lattuada – to talk about the many women who have made the history of our city, who are too often little known. From this awareness was born the idea of the site on female toponymy, with the intent to constantly update it with other symbolic places for Milan and a museum itinerary with significant works. Likewise, the many initiatives scattered throughout the city throughout the month of March will increasingly support a city fit for women. today with the rectors of Milan - she continued - has the meaning of giving further impetus to scientific study paths and to support career paths: starting again from important women in the scientific world is a way of saying that every woman can build her own future. A city of women is a better city for men and women, of this I am sure."

Milan will celebrate March 8 with numerous initiatives from the center to the neighborhoods thanks to the collaboration between the Municipality, institutions, museums and town halls.

All appointments are published on website of the Municipality of Milan.

Female toponymy site

The "women's streets" page is online from today (access from the Milano-città-delle-donne website) created by the municipality's toponymy sector which groups together the streets, squares, monuments and stumbling blocks in a single itinerary ( memory of those deported to concentration camps) dedicated to women.

Milan has the tradition of naming city streets and places after women; since 2017 we have set ourselves the goal of rebalancing gender in the headings, to make Milan, also symbolically, a city of women and men. Knowing the biographies of the women to whom streets, squares, monuments, gardens, walks and stumbling blocks are named is a way to not forget and also to renew the commitment to recognizing equality.
