At 10 am in front of Palazzo Marino a moment in support of Iranian women

Milan, November 24 2022 – Tomorrow, Friday 25 November, on the occasion of the Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala will go to the Registry Office in Via Larga, where at 9 am – from the central hall – he will introduce a minute's silence which will be observed at the same time in all municipal offices, in memory of all victims of violence. Afterwards, the councilors Gaia Romani (Civic Services), Lamberto Bertolé (Welfare) and Tommaso Sacchi (Culture) will read the names of the women killed in 2022 at the hands of violent men.

This year it will be the registry offices that will transform themselves into real safeguards against gender violence. In fact, thanks to a collaboration with the Library System and the Anti-Violence Network of the Municipality of Milan, for the entire opening hours (8 ÷ 30), in some locations there will be Bibliopoints which will offer a selection of books and audiovisual programs dedicated to raising public awareness on the topic of women's rights and gender violence, and information points animated by operators from the municipal anti-violence network and LIS interpreters.

Five registry offices will be involved, the central one in via Larga and the four decentralized ones in via Oglio (Town Hall 4), viale Tibaldi (Town Hall 5), piazza Stovani (Town Hall 7) and piazzale Accursio (Town Hall 8).

At the proposal of the city council, tomorrow the civic flag will be flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning for the victims of femicide and to express solidarity with their families.

Furthermore, as part of the anniversary established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999, the Administration intends to celebrate the memory of Mahsa Amini and the courage of the many women in Iran who are challenging a regime that tramples on their rights. At 10 am, in the presence of councilors Bertolé and Romani, as a sign of solidarity and closeness, it will be displayed from a window Palazzo Marino an artefact with the photo of the young twenty-two-year-old Iranian arrested and killed for not wearing the veil correctly and the writing "Women, life, freedom. Solidarity with Iranian women".
