“The talents of women”. Civic Aquarium, the exhibition “The color of water” opens to the public from Thursday 6 February. Maria Cristiana Fioretti”

Milan, February 5 2020 – “What is the color of water? And what about the air?”. The exhibition by Maria Cristiana Fioretti, an experimental multimedia artist in the field of chromatology, which will be held from 6 February to 8 March 2020 at the Civic Aquarium of Milan, is about to answer these questions.

The event is promoted by the Municipality of Milan | Culture and the Civic Aquarium and is part of the "The talents of women" program, promoted by the Municipality of Milan and dedicated to the female universe which throughout 2020 offers disciplinary initiatives - from visual arts to various forms of live entertainment, from literature to the media, from fashion to science - dedicated to women protagonists in culture and creative thought.

The itinerary proposed by the curator Raffaella Resch presents around 30 pictorial and multimedia works, including around ten canvases from the "Meduse" series, created specifically for the Milanese exhibition, and two site-specific installations.

Since 2010, the year of her solo exhibition "Light-Abstr-Action" at the Casa dell'Energia in Milan, Cristiana Fioretti's work has been based on the fusion between colour, light, space and sound. Alongside the new works, the exhibition will feature some of his most significant works from the last ten years, taken from the cycles “Dream in box” (2010), “LightNess” (Light Art, 2010) and “Colormaps or spices” (2015), as well as “fluo” painting (“Black light Art”, 2017) made with colors sensitive to light and the multimedia installation work “Sensorial Space” (2013) presented for the first time at Palazzo Bembo in Venice (on the occasion of the 55th Biennale d 'Art of Venice) and proposed here again: a "sensory box", designed as a sort of aquarium, a play of bubbling water inside transparent hemispherical tanks, accompanied by light and sound effects that recall the sea and the sun of the south of France where the artist lives.

Cristiana Fioretti's research is mainly aimed at light, color and interaction with elements such as water and earth. The artist explores ever-changing techniques and materials, both in relation to the history of European art, starting from Goethe's optical research, up to the use of contemporary artificial illuminating elements. In her works, Fioretti uses special pigments composed by her, which interact in the material composition of the painting in order to obtain surprising results, with colors and reflections depending on the incidence and quantity of light during the day.

The artist continues his investigations on the use of material finds linked to the earth and the environment, to define an artistic mapping of some coastal sites which are characterized as his places of affection. Menton in France, where he lives, overlooking the coast on the Ligurian Sea; the Adriatic Sea of the Marche where she was born and raised; the tropical Keys Islands located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico; and now, on the occasion of the Milanese exhibition, the immersive landscape of the  underwater seabed.

The installation is curated by Domenico Nicolamarino, with the collaboration of Gaetano Corica and Fabio Agrifoglio.

The catalogue, published by Silvana editorial, will contain a presentation by Maria Cristina Galli, Deputy Director of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, and texts by Raffaella Resch (introduction to the exhibition), Jacqueline Ceresoli (“Sensorial Space. From Venice 2013 to Milan 2020 ”), Guido Curto (“Chromatology. The exhibitions of San Remo and Turin in 2013”), Hugues De la Touche (“Colours and light of the South of France”), Gisella Gellini (“The works of Light art and Black Light art and the lessons at the Polytechnic of Milan"), Xu Jin ("Art and teaching.
