Ferrara Square

Ferrara Square

The path of the pact

Tappeto, included in the context of Luoghicomuni – Lacittàintorno, is the point of arrival of a participatory journey with the inhabitants of the Corvetto district who, through various workshop meetings called “Tappeto, a collective action for Piazza Ferrara al Corvetto”, have imagined the pedestrian area of Piazzale Ferrara like a carpet woven with signs, colors, desires, symbols, stories, actions. Other meetings, supported by Labsus, featured the Market's traders to share the meaning of the proposal and gather their opinions on it.

The path towards the pact is the result of various project actions that came together thanks to the collaboration of the Neighborhood Laboratory which supported and accompanied the creation of an informal network called "Rete Corvetto"; the purpose of the network is to systematize the different experiences and strengths of associations and active citizens present in the neighborhood.

Piazza Ferrara common good.

“Waiting for carpet” is the first of two collaboration agreements which aim to regenerate Piazzale Ferrara, the heart of the Mazzini district and home to the historic covered municipal market, unfortunately marred by episodes of violence, degradation and neglect.

In November 2019, the associations and citizens presented, in response to the public notice Open Squares, with the support of Labsus – the ideas of coloring and urban transformation of Piazza Ferrara are the result of the active involvement of the inhabitants.

While waiting to carry out the work of tactical urbanism, “Waiting for Tappeto” aims to not disperse the ideas and desire for initiatives that emerged in the various discussions on artistic planning.

Ferrara Square

Initiatives

Many initiatives are the subject of the pact: from entertainment within the Municipal Market to bicycle tours, in line with the reconnection of existing cycle paths and always using the square as a meeting and starting point; from workshops, lessons and seminars open to the neighborhood, to the collective planting of new trees donated by the Snam Foundation and planted by Italia Nostra.

The agreement, the result of the participatory process of collective planning of Piazza Ferrara, can be considered an integration of the activities envisaged by the “Waiting for Carpet” pact.

Purpose of the project

The project, which participated in the Piazze Aperte tender, reviews mobility around Piazzale Ferrara, with an eye on slow mobility and parking; involves the placement of new trees and a landscaping of the square, the installation of mobile and flexible street furniture of potted plants (curated by the signatories) and a decoration on the ground, co-designed with the citizens.
