Guide to choosing training courses and orientation services

This page describes the training offer that boys and girls can access at the end of lower and upper secondary school. To make an informed choice between different school paths, it is important to first focus on one's own characteristics: aptitudes, desires, motivations, interests, values ​​and limits.


After middle school:

- Secondary school, lasting five years: high schools, technical institutes and professional institutes. Obtaining a diploma allows you to enroll at university, continue with post-diploma training or higher technical education (ITS) or enter the world of work.

- Vocational Education and Training (IeFP) which is divided into: three-year courses (Qualification of professional education and training) and four-year courses (Diploma of professional education and training), both aimed at developing professional skills that can be immediately used in the work context, thanks also to a large number of hours spent alternating between school - Work.
The courses are held at Professional Training Centers (commonly called CFP), accredited by the Lombardy Region and have the same legal value as courses scheduled by the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR).

After high school:

- University
To choose the most suitable one for your characteristics:
University in Lombardy, list with addresses and websites.
Universitaly.it, is a database for researching university courses in Italy by the MIUR (Ministry of Education, University and Research), created specifically to accompany students in their studies.

ITS  (Higher Technical Institutes), are courses of two years parallel and alternative to the traditional university system that allow you to become a highly specialized technician. They are designed and created by foundations that collaborate with companies, universities/scientific and technological research centres, local entities, and the school and training system. At the end of the process, the title awarded is the Higher Technical Diploma (EQF level V for four-semester courses), which allows access to public competitions.

- HTE (Higher Technical Education and Training), these are training courses lasting a year, very practical because they leave ample space for laboratories and above all they offer useful and concrete tools to respond to the demands of the world of work as they are in line with the professional demands of companies. At the end of the course year you will be able to obtain a Higher Technical Specialization Certificate immediately usable in the Italian and European job market or access an ITS path if you want to specialize even more.

- Special university institutes: these are highly specialized university training courses where it is possible to access on merit and after passing an entrance exam.

- Higher education institutes, to choose the training path most suited to your aptitude in the fields of art, music, dance and theatre. Here is an overview of Italian higher education institutions:

- Remedial courses for diploma - CIA “A. Manzoni": it is the only school in the Municipality of Milan that offers preparation aimed at taking exams (to be carried out at State or Private Schools) to recover years of studies (two years in one) and obtain the Diploma through an abbreviated path.

- School Orientation Service
It is aimed at students of lower secondary schools (commonly called middle school) for the choice of upper secondary school (commonly called high school).

- School Seeking-Offro Service (School orientation for young foreigners)
Orientation and support service for school placement aimed at young foreigners aged 14 to 21, who arrived in Italy no more than three years ago. Access to the service is by appointment only, to be requested by sending an email to the address: CercoOffroScuola@comune.milano.it

CODIS - Unit to combat school dropout
The service deals with the prevention and fight against school dropout (6-16 years) through educational actions organized at school and in the area.
Educational Tutoring: it is the new service for the educational care of minors in serious situations of school dropout or already in a state of school abandonment, reported by schools or local services to facilitate their return to class.
To access the "Educational Tutoring Office" service, the address is: ED.scuoleseguemi@comune.milano.it. Whoever reports must indicate their name, surname, position towards the reported person, name and surname of the reported person, age, residence, class and school attended and the reason why the intervention is requested. Please remember that the service welcomes boys and girls from 1st grade to two years of high school, i.e. of compulsory school age, no older than 16.
Poli Start counters: they are territorial centers that collaborate in networks with city schools, integrated professional teams, intercultural experts to promote and implement the welcome of foreign families, the inclusion of their children in schools and the teaching of Italian as a second language.

Study help centers

Portofranco: it is a study help center aimed at high school students and offers them free help in carrying out their homework, recovering their educational debts and disciplinary knowledge.

- PASS is an initiative conceived by the volunteers of Nuova Acropoli with the aim of creating a solidarity network to support high school children who have difficulties in studying, thus contributing to combating the phenomenon of school dropouts and helping families in this period of economic crisis.

- The CAGs (Youth Aggregation Centres) of the Municipality of Milan
They offer scholastic support activities but also opportunities for free aggregation and laboratory and training activities for girls and boys aged between 11 and 20, providing concrete help in dealing with problems both in the school and family contexts.

- THE CEDAG (Educational and youth aggregation centres)
They are dedicated to boys and girls in elementary, middle and high schools, to prevent school dropouts, facilitate aggregation and carry out an educational function, through personalized scholastic support, sports activities and tournaments, moments of group life with trips and holiday periods.

State universities

University of Milan: Educational offer: agriculture, pharmacy, law, literature and philosophy, medicine and surgery, veterinary medicine, mathematical-physical and natural sciences, motor sciences, political sciences.

University of Milan - Bicocca: Training offer: economics, law, medicine and surgery, psychology, educational science, mathematical-physical and natural sciences, statistical sciences, sociology.

Politecnico di Milano: Educational offer: architecture, design, engineering and online courses.

Private universities

Luigi Bocconi Commercial University: Training offer: economics, finance, management and technology, decision sciences, "Angelo Sraffa" legal studies, institutional analysis and public management, accounting.

Sacred Heart Catholic University: Teaching offer: sociology, political science, mathematical, physical and natural sciences, linguistic sciences and foreign literature, education sciences, banking, financial and insurance sciences, psychology, medicine and surgery, literature and philosophy, jurisprudence, economics, agriculture.

Free University of Languages ​​and Communication - IULM: Training offer: foreign languages ​​and communication.

The Master is a post-graduate training course that allows you to develop your knowledge and operational skills in specific areas in line with the demands of the job market. There are different types of master's degrees:

These are post-graduate training courses following the achievement of a three-year degree (first level master's degree) or a master's degree (second level master's degree).
