Wonders and hidden treasures in the parks of Milan

Milan, May 06 2023 - The appointment with the initiative organized by the Voluntary Ecological Guards (GEV), which leads Milanese people to discover the beauty and environmental heritage of the city parks.
Le GEV they are a body of volunteers for ecological surveillance. They promote the formation of a civic conscience and stimulate respect and interest in nature and the territory. During the service, the GEVs are public officials with administrative police functions and can ascertain and sanction some abuses concerning public green areas.
There are 180 ecological guards operating throughout the city. Anyone can become one after taking a preparatory course.

History and architecture of the park, origin of the trees, botanical information and many other curiosities will be answered during the visits; with the first visits in May, you will be able to enjoy the blooms and with the last, after the summer, the autumn foliage.
A total of 13 events, distributed across the parks of all the municipalities, scheduled from May to October with the aim of raising awareness of the over 170 botanical species present in the city.

These meetings offer the possibility of discovering curious tree species, such as the Tulip Tree (Liriodendro) whose flowers have a Greek pattern that recalls the profile of the Cathedral of Milan, or uncommon ones such as the "Judas Thorn" tree ( Gleditsia triacanthos) with thorny bark (three tips of different lengths and directions), so called in reference to the crown of thorns used during the Passion of Jesus, or even the "Bagolaro" whose wood is used to build tools that require great resistance such as wheels, handles, oars, whips and, once upon a time, to make walking sticks called "bagole".

The first appointment is scheduled for Sunday 07 May at 10:00 am in the Garden of Villa Belgiojoso Bonaparte, with meeting point in via Palestro 16.

They will follow, again from 10:00 to 12:00: 13 May at the Vittorio Formentano park, 20 May at the Alessandrina Ravizza park, 28 May at the Crocerossine park, then 3 June at the Cave park, on June 10th at the Martiri della Libertà park in via Petrocchi (Town Hall 2), on 18 June at the Lambretta park, on 25 June at the Villa Scheibler park. The visits then resume, after the summer break, on 10 September at the Maria Peron and Sister Giovanna Mosna garden, on 16 September at the Aldo Aniasi park, on 17 September at the Guastalla garden, on 23 September at the Gregor Mendel garden (Town Hall 2), and finally the last one in the middle of autumn, on 21 October at the Lambro park.

The visits are open to all and no reservation is required.
