Our history on the walls

Our story on the walls is a invitation to a walk through time along the walls of Milan to see or review the posters that informed of the language courses organized by the Municipality: foreign, European and oriental languages, Italian language taught to foreigners but also literacy for Italians who needed to improve themselves and improve their working conditions.

Always an indispensable tool, languages in all their forms have accompanied the progress of people: the Italian language in a modernizing country; foreign languages as a vehicle for meetings, information and work; sign language; computer literacy to be able to access new communication and work tools; programming languages.

All this and much more has been made available to everyone in the courses organized by the Municipality of Milan.

The short overview of posters on this page is testimony to this service.

From the research at the Civic Archives and from the choice of posters to publish, a cross-section of the educational and training choices of municipal administrations from the immediate post-war period to today has taken shape.

An example among others: a world war had just ended: 1946 "evening course in the international language Esperanto".
