European programs for young people

The European Union has prepared a series of tools to encourage the active citizenship of young people, their future employability to face the new challenges posed by a global and increasingly competitive job market, and participation in civil society.

To achieve these objectives, the programs made available to young Europeans strongly focus on learning mobility, especially in terms of "non-formal learning", i.e. educational and personal growth through experiences of voluntary work, real volunteering and precisely, of participation, of self-entrepreneurship.

This is therefore a series of very important opportunities for all those young Europeans aged between 13 and 30 who will be able to go abroad to study at university, do an internship, an internship or an assistantship. They will also be able to acquire and/or transmit professional skills in another European country.

On this page, in addition to a series of useful links to have an overview of the main sites of the European Union bodies and the wide range of programs in the most varied fields, we have tried to focus attention on the main and most usable community tools that offer young people the opportunity to live enriching mobility experiences abroad.

Erasmus+ is the European Union program in the field of education, training, youth mobility and sport for the seven-year period 2014-2020. The main aim of the program is to increase the level of mobility in the learning sector and to create networks between subjects active in the training sector, all with a view to greater employability, also in response to the ever-increasing challenges posed by global markets . Another objective of the program is to encourage the active participation of young people in society on the basis of the guidelines established by the Treaty of Lisbon.

The structure of the program is centered on 3 themes [education and training, youth, sport] which are in turn operationally divided into 3 key actions:

  • Key action 1: Individual mobility
  • Key Action 2: Collaboration on innovation and exchange of good practices
  • Key Action 3: Support for policy reform

In particular, with regards to the theme of Youth, the objectives of the program concern:

- the improvement of young people's key competences and skills

- promote quality improvements in youth work

- integrate political reforms at local, regional and national levels

- increase the international dimension of activities in the youth sector and increase the capacity of youth workers and organizations to support young people

Key elements of individual mobility are, under Action 1:

- The Youth exchanges, an opportunity aimed at young people aged 13 to 30 to participate in a meeting between two or more groups of young people from different countries to tackle a common theme together. Within a minimum period of 5 days and a maximum of 21, participants have the opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss, acquire knowledge and awareness of different socio-cultural realities.

- The European Solidarity Corps is the new European Union initiative aimed at all those young people between 18 and 30 who want to participate in work or volunteering projects (abroad or in their own country) which aim to objectively help European populations in difficulty .

The activities carried out as part of action 1 will be certified at the end of the experience through documentation Youthpass. The resource center is also active Jump-youth created with the aim of supporting advanced learning and rapid access to training opportunities within the Youth programme.
