Hit by a bomb launched during a demonstration, he died at just 22 years old in the heroic gesture of saving a fellow policeman

Milan, 12 April 2023 – Fifty years have passed since the death of Antonio Marino, a young public security guard of the State Police killed by a hand grenade thrown at officers during a demonstration organized by the Italian Social Movement and the Youth Front. It is April 12, 1973, Black Thursday in Milan. Antonio dies in via Bellotti, a few steps from Piazza Fratelli Bandiera, in the heroic act of saving the life of a colleague: realizing the trajectory of the bomb, he manages to push his friend away but is hit in the chest and dies.

Today the agent killed on duty at just 22 years old was remembered in the garden in Piazza Fratelli Bandiera named after him in April 2010.

Originally from a town in the province of Caserta, after having attended the pupil schools of Alessandria and Nettuno and won the competition to join the Police, Antonio took up service in the Mobile Department of Milan. In 2009 he was awarded the Gold Medal of Civil Merit in his memory.

The ceremony of the fiftieth anniversary of his death was opened by the execution of the Silence and the laying of laurel wreaths. Speakers included representatives of the municipal administration, the Prefect of Milan Renato Saccone, the Police Commissioner Giuseppe Pertronzi, the President of ANPI Milan Roberto Cenati and the family members of Antonio Marino. A picket from the Third Department of the Mobile Police in Milan paid homage to the killed agent and all the fallen police officers.
