The past has never stopped communicating with the present and the co-presence in the uprising of the two tendencies, one moderate and pro-Savoy, the other democratic and republican, was reflected in the subsequent celebratory and historiographical seasons.

  • MORANDO PALACE

From Tuesday 12 March to Sunday 14 April
THE FIVE DAYS OF MILAN AT PALAZZO MORANDO

On the occasion of the Five Days of Milan, Palazzo Morando exceptionally exhibits two paintings by Giannino Grossi (1889-1969) depicting some city monuments linked to that historical moment, known as the "Milan Revolution": between 18 and 22 March 1848 the Milanese ousted the Austrian government and established a provisional government. This episode is part of that political ferment of uprisings and insurrections that characterized numerous cities of the Peninsula throughout the nineteenth century, contributing to the process of national unification.

The two oil paintings in fact represent the Verziere Column, which from 1860 until 1895 was renamed the Victory Column and became the place dedicated to the cult and memory of this event until the erection of the definitive monument. The latter is the subject of the other painting created in 1895 by the sculptor Giuseppe Grandi in the place where the ancient Porta Tosa stood, the first gate to be conquered by the Milanese insurgents, and for this reason renamed Porta Vittoria after the Unification of Italy. The assault on Porta Tosa is the subject of a painting by Giulio Gorra (1832-1884) included in the permanent exhibition of Palazzo Morando (room 9).
