Milan: Memory and Future of Rights - World Human Rights Day

MILAN IS MEMORY.

Liliana Segre responds to the appeal of Human Rights Foundation which invites you to choose your own "Place of Rights" in Milan on World Human Rights Day.

More stories, one memory.
More rights, a future.

Saturday 10 December 2022, 12pm
Auditorium of Radio Popolare Demetrio Stratos, Milan
Within the project MILAN: MEMORY AND FUTURE OF RIGHTS

On the occasion of World Human Rights Day, Saturday 10 December 2022, Milan takes another step towards a future as the capital of human rights by inaugurating the first phase of the "Milan: memory and future of rights" project which will accompany the city until February 2023 .
The initiative constitutes the first public event of the Human Rights Foundation - which, founded in March 2022, inherits and continues the path of the Human Rights Festival - and is created with the contribution of the City of Milan within the project "Milan is Memory" and of AEM Foundation.

During this first meeting entitled "More stories, a memory. More rights, a future", which will be held at the Demetrio Stratos Auditorium, the public will be invited to participate in the collective construction and "live" recording of one of the five podcasts that will make up the "Milan: memory and future of rights" project: five audio guides, downloadable for free starting from February 2023, which will tell small and large stories of rights (or their violations) that have taken shape in as many places in Milan and which give substance to the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948.
Participating will be very simple: simply bring and share your story of a "place of rights" in Milan and explain the choice which will be recorded and used for the podcasts.

The first to respond to the Human Rights Foundation's appeal was the senator for life Liliana Segre who chose one of the most symbolic in the city as his "place of rights": «I chose the Shoah Memorial. I chose it because from here - declares Segre - like me as a young girl, hundreds of people left who had the sole fault of being born. They arrived after having already lost everything: their loved ones, their school, their home. It was the first stop towards the hell organized by other men: the extermination camps.
Around this part of the Milan station, the city remained indifferent. Without the indifference of the so-called ordinary people the horror of the Shoah would not have been possible. This is the enormous evocative force of this Memorial, which can only be renewed if many, young and old, visit it."

The first episode will have the protagonist Radio Polare: a bastion of freedom of expression (article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights), of freedom of association (article 20), which ensures everyone the possibility of participating in cultural life (article 27).
On the occasion of the event, some of the protagonists of the station's history will also be present to record the podcast, in a shared moment with a high symbolic value that will bring together personal and collective memories.

The project intends to make known the small and large deeds that have given substance to the values of solidarity, peace, anti-fascism and human rights in the past and recent history of Milan and to project it towards the future, because more and more Milanese - especially those and those of the new generation - can recognize themselves in these roots of values, and together build a citizenship capable of making Milan a capital of human rights.

The initiative is also accompanied by a digital form that can be downloaded at the link https://bit.ly/call-luoghi-diritti-milano, through which citizens will be able to report their places of human rights in Milan, and the related stories, to collect and promote their memory.
This form for reporting other places aims to give a further boost to the active involvement of citizens and make them protagonists of the city, for the city.

Entrance is free while places last.
