4 November 2021 - Commemoration of the translation of the Unknown Soldier to the Altar of the Fatherland
The Municipality of Milan, with council resolution no. 48 of 21 June 2021 (see Programme), awarded honorary citizenship to the Unknown Soldier, adhering to the proposal formulated by the group Gold Medals for Military Valor of Italy and supported by the National Association of Italian Municipalities and the Permanent National Council of Armed Forces Associations.
"The choice - states the provision - testifies to the gratitude of the City of Milan to all those who, at any time, have lost their lives, for having fulfilled their duty towards Italy, for having remained faithful to the values of justice and of social solidarity to defend the homeland, for having served their community or defended others, testifying to the value of their sacrifice and perpetuating their memory".
At the celebrations of 1 June 2021 intervene:
- Lorenzo Guerini, Ministry of Defense;
- Paolo Mieli, historian and journalist;
- Grazia Riccio Bergamas, great-granddaughter of Maria Bergamas.
