25 APRIL - CELEBRATIONS FOR THE 78TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LIBERATION FROM NAZI-FASCISM

The City of Milan is preparing to celebrate April 25th, the 78th anniversary of the Liberation from Nazi-fascism. 
The ceremonies promoted by institutions and many associations are numerous and widespread throughout the territory.

The main event with which the city celebrates Liberation Day is the Procession which starts on Tuesday 25 April from Corso Venezia at 14pm, arriving in Piazza Duomo for speeches from the stage.

Various commemorations will take place in the symbolic places (Palazzo Marino, Merchants' Loggia, Monument to the fifteen martyrs of Piazzale Loreto...). Here the program of the ceremonies where representatives of the institutions, of the Jewish communities, of ANPI, the civil, military and religious authorities and the citizens will participate.

On April 26th, at 11.30 am, in via Lupetta, 8 theinauguration of the mural “Rebel Mayors – Milan 1945-1976”. Mural created by the artistic collective Ortricanoodles and the OrME-Ortica Memoria Association of Milan, in collaboration with FIAP and the Aniasi Foundation and with the patronage of the Municipality of Milan. Antonio Greppi, Virgilio Ferrari, Gino Cassinis, Pietro Bucalossi and Aldo Aniasi: they are the "rebel mayors" who at different times exercised the role of first citizen following the liberation of Italy, and who were proud opponents of Nazi-fascism during that season we call Resistance.

At the Sforzesco Castle, in the Sala dei Pilastri, it will be open to visitors until 25 June the exhibition: "Despite the long time that has passed...The Nazi-fascist massacres in the War of Liberation 1943 -1945"
The exhibition can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 17.30pm, with entrance from Piazza Castello 1. 

Thursday 27 April 2023 at 10 am, at the Nicola Moreschi Institute - organized by ANPI sez. Milan Magenta "E. Curiel" - the unveiling of the commemorative plaques dedicated to Giorgio Latis and the other students and teachers expelled from the School in 1938, including the Headmaster, following the application of Royal Decree Law no. 1390 for the defense of the race.

April 25th will also be celebrated through music with two concerts at the “Giuseppe Verdi” Conservatory of Milan. The shows are part of the second edition of the initiative “Milan is Memory 2023. The Milan Conservatory for its City” and are scheduled:

  • on April 24, at 20 pm (Eve of the Anniversary of the Liberation);
  • on April 25th, at 11 am (Anniversary of the Liberation).

Al Shoah memorial in Milan, Tuesday 25 April, on the occasion of Liberation Day, the guided tours will focus on the lives of the resisters, and on the Liberation movement, with special attention to the partisan actions in Milan. To register for visits, click here

Furthermore, there are numerous initiatives organized in the 9 Municipalities. (Town Hall 1, Town Hall 2, Town Hall 3Town Hall 4, Town Hall 5, Town Hall 6, Town Hall 7, Town Hall 9)
In collaboration with the Town Hall 1 and as part of the initiatives of City of Milan - Milan is memory, on April 25th the usual laying of wreaths on the tombstones of fallen partisans will also take place this year in the Porta Romana district. ANPI zone 1, ATIR, Teatro Carcano will enliven the installation route which will start from the Bazlen-Foà gardens around 10.00. There are 4 stages in a journey that will end around 11.30 at the Carcano Theater in Corso di Porta Romana 63.
The tour will be animated by musical moments and readings on the theme of the Constitution, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary.
