Internationally recognized geneticist, scientist and academic. His fundamental and pioneering contribution was to investigate the human genome, searching within it for traces of the most remote times. Thanks to his studies, it has been possible to find, in the current genetic heritage of man, the mark left by the great migratory movements, reconstructing the history of the last one hundred and fifty thousand years of humanity. This way of looking at science has given rise to a new field of research, population genetics. We owe him the renewed vision of what the human species is, without races, divisions and entirely descended from a small group of pioneers who, immigrating from Africa, spread our genes and our culture throughout the world. He has dedicated great energy to the dissemination and training of young people, organizing large exhibitions in Milan and throughout Italy on human evolution and the inconsistency of the concept of race.
For fourteen years, director of Gariwo and vice-president of the Garden of the Righteous Association of Milan. An attentive reader of the world, she has committed part of her life to the difficult battle for memory, telling the story through the events of minorities and the lives of individuals. She worked hard to keep alive the memory of someone who gave a lot to the world by saving the weak, the persecuted and opposing genocide. You have worked in search of the unknown or ignored facts of the Holocaust, of dissent in Eastern countries, of Stalinism, of the Armenian and Rwandan genocides, of ethnic cleansing in the Balkans, of racism in South Africa. Her story also tells of her commitment to remembering the victims of the mafia and women. Born from the dream of six young people who left Milan for the rural area of ​​Borom, in Chad, it has just celebrated its first fifty years of activity. Today it is an important reality in the panorama of secular and independent non-governmental organizations: there are more than two hundred and seventy people who operate in fourteen different countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe to combat poverty by proposing sustainable, participatory and innovative solutions. The commitment towards the peripheries of the planet and the marginalized groups focuses on the protection and protection of the environment and territory, on the responsible use of natural resources, on access to water and food resources as a fundamental human right. Particular attention is also paid to children to guarantee attendance and quality of school education for all.
Ordained a priest in 1985, for eighteen years he has been president of Opera San Francesco per i Poveri, an organization which in sixty years of activity has involved thousands of Milanese people in volunteering at the service of the poor in a welcoming and sober style, contributing to alleviating suffering of many and to consolidate the Ambrosian commitment to active charity. By his will, the Opera's activity was directed towards a more personalized look at needs, structuring services around the person. Under his guidance, the restructuring of the environments, the strengthening of services, the involvement of volunteers, the loyalty of benefactors have made it a fundamental and necessary point of reference for Italians and foreigners in a state of poverty and serious marginalization in the Lombardy capital.
In fifty years of activity, first as an informal group and then as a voluntary association, it has made its own the values ​​of the Milanese tradition of civil mercy and hospitality. In a city that embraces and supports, it has been able to take care of the least by offering hot meals, meeting spaces, but above all listening and dialogue. An expression of volunteering that makes moral support one of the pillars of its mission, it has taken care of homeless people, those with mental health problems, addictions, ex-prisoners, lonely and destitute elderly people, and has activated numerous listening and recovery services. Thanks to one hundred volunteers who support operators, educators and psychologists, today it manages day and night reception centres. Its objectives are human promotion and the social reintegration of the marginalized and excluded. It celebrated twenty years of activity spent trying to aggregate and represent the different realities of Milanese associations with the aim of promoting and developing them in all their forms. Thanks to this constant commitment, over time it has become a point of reference, the true home of all Milanese volunteering of which it has always considered itself an active part and supporter of innovation and change. Thanks to the first services offered in the area, those of information and consultancy, it was able to collect and respond to the needs expressed by the associations. Subsequently, through support for training and planning, she contributed to their growth, enhancing the principles of solidarity, sharing and encouraging the concrete participation of everyone in the civil development of society.
Established in 1983 by a group of scholars with an economic, legal, philosophical and political background to promote interdisciplinary reflection on the relationship between ethics and public choices, in 1990 it created the Study Center for research and training in politics and ethics, with headquarters in Milan. Since its inception it has positioned itself as a critical interlocutor and technical-scientific support for those sectors of society involved in the development of a public culture oriented towards the criteria of efficiency, effectiveness and social equity. With a section dedicated to reflection on bioethics, opened in 1985, it has proven to be at the forefront on topics of nascent interest, such as those of business, corporate responsibility and information technology issues.
Cabaret artist, actor, director, singer-songwriter, a multifaceted artist who has enriched the Milanese cultural scene since the end of the Sixties. He was born artistically as a chansonnier at Gino Negri's Cassina de 'Pomm, and then attended the Accademia d'Arte Drammatica del Piccolo Teatro. From Giorgio Gaber to Enzo Jannacci, passing through Dario Fo and Franca Rame, he has collaborated with the most famous Milanese artists. Fifty years dedicated to building "a world in which no child feels alone and everyone can grow up happy". This is the vision that has been pursued since 1968 by the first organization in Italy to deal with international adoptions, active today with cooperation projects to guarantee protection, well-being and social inclusion to the most vulnerable children in twenty-five countries around the world. In its long history it has contributed to the drafting of the law regulating international adoption in Italy and to the international convention of The Hague of 1993, which defines the procedures in over ninety countries. Born on the initiative of a group of families who wanted to commit themselves to welcoming abandoned children as their own, it organized the first world conference on adoption and foster care in Milan in 1971 and received recognition as an NGO from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2000.
Founded in 1970 with the aim of providing civil, social, health, humanitarian and cooperation protection activities, thanks to the commitment of four thousand five hundred volunteers and over eight hundred doctors and nurses it has always brought assistance and relief to territories and people in difficulty . From the disasters that hit the Belice valley, Friuli, Irpinia, Amatrice, up to the international missions in the most depressed areas of the world, the Corps of the Order of Malta is included in the list of Civil Protection organizations of national importance. And since 2008 he has been engaged on board the naval devices of the military corps in the Mediterranean from which he has provided healthcare to over one hundred and ninety thousand migrants. In Milan, where he recently inaugurated a new headquarters and a mobile medical clinic, he is active every day in supporting the homeless thanks to the Street Unit.
To the team that he has led for about ten years as director of the Oncology department of the Fatebenefratelli, he has transmitted the values ​​of his way of working: that dedication to the patient and the attention towards the family members which allow, during the treatment process, to respond with competence in the needs of the patient and moral support in the most difficult moment of life. You joined Fatebenefratelli in 1986 and have dedicated over thirty years of activity to improving the ability to welcome cancer patients and accompany them in the often long and uncertain clinical treatments of an illness that generates anxiety and fear. Her scientific publications have been countless, alongside an innate ability to empathize with others, making her a competent and humane doctor.
It takes its inspiration and name from its founder's mother who, during a long hospital stay for her infant son, brought joy and light-heartedness to all the children in the department every day in the hospital. Thus, in 1995, 'Doctor Dreams' was born - today there are more than thirty - with the important mission of bringing moments of play, listening and smiles to the little ones hospitalized. Over thirty-five thousand patients are visited every year in the thirty-eight departments in which it operates, also present in Switzerland, France, England, Spain, Belarus, Turkey and Hong Kong. In 2015 he inaugurated a new visit program, Surgical Accompaniment, at the Vittore Buzzi Children's Hospital in Milan, with the aim of easing anxieties and lowering the stress level of children and their families from the moment of waiting before surgery until waking up.
Since its inception it has always played an important role in providing assistance to those - and there are twenty-five thousand people affected in Italy - who suffer from this rare pathology, for which the cure is not yet known. In fact, there is currently no therapy for scleroderma and the drugs currently used are aimed at preventing or treating complications. In twenty-five years of activity, the association has contributed to providing patients with the possibility of receiving assistance from an integrated team in a short time, also offering access to research protocols with experimental treatments and collecting - from 2008 to today - almost two and a half million euros for research. A commendable activity which aims to lead to the discovery of new treatments and the birth of new hopes for recovery.
Born twenty years ago to promote a culture of peace based on intercultural and interreligious dialogue, it is involved in organizing social animation camps in Italy and abroad, training and international cooperation projects. Activities that led thousands of Milanese to support minors first in the Balkans and Eastern countries, then in many other territories around the world. In addition to international volunteering, in Milan he promoted responsible tourism and identified sport as another tool for building peaceful relationships. The commitment to training on international issues is also important: since 2005 it has organized the only Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian language course active in Milan, rendering a very valuable service to the city. She has applied the profession of director and playwright to women, dedicating herself to writing and directing shows on the stories of extraordinary and otherwise extraordinary women, from Frida Kahlo to the homeless Antonella. Since 1989 you have begun to bring art to places of hardship and thanks to the social cooperative Centro Europeo Teatro e Carcere you have contributed to the social reintegration of imprisoned actors and actresses. In 2015 you brought the Edge Festival to Italy from England, a festival of diversity theaters that involves inclusive artistic realities with deaf or disabled actors. Today you dedicate yourself to the training of artists, many foreigners, who wish to work in places of hardship, inspiring young people to seek art not as an end in itself, but as a form of social redemption, denunciation and testimony.
As president of the Blood Volunteers Association of Milan, of which he is now honorary president, he contributed to giving voice to volunteering and spreading the values ​​of solidarity and altruism which are the basis of civic coexistence. Thanks to a fruitful dialogue with local institutions and local associations, he is committed to spreading the culture of volunteering and giving, with particular attention to that of blood. Through initiatives to raise awareness, information, research and dissemination of health promotion, he has been able to remind citizens of the duty of generosity and solidarity of humanity which is also expressed through blood donation. After having suffered the drama of deportation to the Nazi extermination camps, he oriented his life towards the moral duty of spreading memory and bearing witness. She was the last one, born in 1933 in the Italian town of Fiume, to a family of Jewish origin, she was baptized and raised according to Catholic principles. But not even the choice to move to San Daniele del Friuli to escape the bombings and racial persecution will save her from arrest and deportation: in 1944 the entire family is in Auschwitz-Birkenau and from there, as an eleven-year-old, she will have to face the 'march of death' towards the Ravensbruck concentration camp and then to Bergen-Belsen. Once of age, she moved to Milan to work as a seamstress and raise her own family. She has never shied away from the commitment of her testimony, which she also collected in a diary published in 2014 with the title 'A little girl in Auschwitz'.
