Applications for citizenship by marriage, residence or adoption are submitted to Ministero dell'Interno

Below are some clarifications.


Citizenship by marriage to an Italian citizen or citizen
In the case of marriage to an Italian citizen or citizen, the foreign or stateless spouse who resides after the marriage can submit the request:

  • legally in Italy for at least 2 years
    or
  • abroad for at least 3 years if, at the time of granting Italian citizenship, there is no divorce or separation of the spouses.

At the time of granting Italian citizenship, no divorce or separation of the spouses must have occurred.


Citizenship by residence
By residence you can submit the request:

  • the citizen or citizen of the European Union, after four years of residence in Italy
  • the citizen or non-EU citizen, after ten years of residence in Italy
  • the citizen or foreign citizen whose parent, or second degree direct ascendant, is an Italian citizen by birth or was born in the territory of the Republic and has legally resided there for at least three years
  • a stateless person, after five years of residence in Italy.


Citizenship by adoption
Citizenship by adoption is recognized to a person:

  • adult foreigner adopted by an Italian citizen or citizen
  • who has spent at least five years as a resident following the adoption.

Anyone who descends from ancestors who never lost their Italian citizenship can be recognized as an Italian citizen.

Upon reaching the age of eighteen, the Municipality sends an invitation to present oneself at the citizenship office to request citizenship.

Anyone who becomes an adult can apply for citizenship if:

  • was born in Italy
  • he resides in Milan and has always been resident in Italy since birth without interruption 
  • has a valid identity document
  • holds a residence permit or card (self-employed, for over 14s)
  • he turned 18 but not yet 19.

Anyone who:

  • has foreign citizenship but obtains recognition from an Italian person 
  • he has lost his Italian citizenship and intends to reacquire it.

The process for obtaining citizenship includes:

  1. request based on your situation
  2. notification of concession decrees - the decrees issued by the Prefect or the President of the Republic are delivered by the Municipality of Milan to the address of residence
  3. oath of loyalty at the municipality of residence.
