OFF Broadway - English Version

But what was I thinking about before I got lost in seeing? Fernando Pessoa
The Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea of Milan is presenting Off Broadway for the Summer of 2006, a collective photographic exhibition which forms part of the Estate Fotografia (Photography Summer), with another two exhibitions at Palazzo Reale.

Off Broadway is a part of New York, traditionally that part where alternative theatre was born and established itself. A new, different and more anti-conventional way of describing reality was born in its cellars in past decades.

Off Broadway Off Broadway is also a place where the six young photographers of Magnum get together - Christopher Anderson, Antoine D’Agata, Thomas Dworzak, Alex Majoli, Paolo Pellegrin, Ilkka Uimonen - each of them seeking to tell the story of their reality in a different way.

Off Broadway is a privileged point of observation but not to be taken for granted; a lateral way of looking at conflicts, the urban landscape and natural disasters with a different approach.

Off Broadway, is finally the first space where the six photographers have decided to gather their efforts, to mix their views together and to organise an exhibition which, for the first time, reflects this new photographic vision. It is a different exhibition in its approach and content, where a sequence of war reportage photos (Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Ethiopia and Kosovo) are seen together alongside other pieces and fragments of images collected from around the world.
The approximately 300 photos and 6 large video projections, with a musical accompaniment by the musician Fabio Barovero, are set one after the other. They speak one screen to another and if not of an actual “new world”, they tell of a new way of looking at this world and of being within it.
    The world of Off Broadway.

The exhibition, conceived of by the six photographers, was first shown in New York in the 60 Mercer Gallery, then during the last edition of the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie at Arles and again in Berlin at the Leica and Rheinland-pfalz. It has never been presented in Italy before. Images are presented here for the very first time thanks to HP digital printing and support from Alcatel, with whom Contrasto has worked on other occasions as part of the Alacatel for Culture project.

As usual the initiative will be accompanied by a programme of educational activities for children, guided visits for individuals and groups and initiatives organised jointly with the COOP Lombardia Group. The tenth edition of the series PACinConcerto will also be held with a programme of contemporary music concerts connected with the contents of the exhibition and conferences on the exhibition.

The exhibition has been organised with the support of Alcatel and Hewlett Packard.
